Key #1: Goaltending;  I say, keep playing Pickard. He wants to win every period. How to motivate Pickard? Keep telling him he's nothing but a 2nd stringer who plays behind the worst NHL starter in history. He plays better mad. Hockey Psychology 101

Key #2: The Penalty Kill;  I say, put Brown on. Just Brown. He can kill penalties by himself and usually threatens to score a 'shorty,' which is uncanny considering his stone hands playing 5 on 5 through the season.

Key #3: Keep Bouchard & Nurse Separated;  I say, Coffey needs to 'Vulcan mind-meld' with Bouchard to prevent this core defenseman playing defense for the opposition. The key is to keep his perfect passes to Golden Knights in the neutral zone.

Key #4: Roll 4 Lines;  Do me a favor. Play Kane with Hyman. It's like having two grizzly bears cruising the boards and working the corners for the Oilers. The rest is taken care of after a couple of shifts by these two bullies.

Key #5: Depth Scoring; Shoot the puck. Everybody. All the time.

As of today, March 27, 2025, Stuart Skinner is not expected to play tonight for the Edmonton Oilers against the Seattle Kraken. Reports indicate that Skinner did not travel with the team to Seattle following an injury sustained during a game against the Dallas Stars on March 26, 2025, where he was clipped in the head by Mikko Rantanen. He is currently out due to precautionary reasons, likely related to Concussion Protocols. And, later in the day, news reports said Olivier Rodrigue has been called up from Bakersfield Condors to play a backup role for Pickard.

A four game losing streak constitutes a tilt when you go from first place to 3rd place in a hurry.

So, can the Oilers right the ship? Oh sure. It's highly possible to put the Oilers back in contention with  one game, this one, against the Panthers.

Does it happen? Nope.

Grok says The Edmonton Oilers played against the Washington Capitals today, January 21, 2025, and unfortunately for the Oilers, they lost with a score of 3-2 to the Capitals. Despite outshooting the Capitals, Logan Thompson, the Capitals' goaltender, made 30 saves to secure the win

Skinner has strong opening period facing 10 shots from Canucks compared to 4 by Oilers with 6 minutes remaining.

But this cannot be sustained and Canucks pour it on when Oilers defensemen take penalties in the defensive zone, first Bouchard, then Ekholm.

Opinion

When the Oilers make the powerplay rush with McDavid it would be nice if another Oilers forward was breaking into the zone at the same time.

It would be an impressive break-in to the opposition zone for the speedy McDavid and either Podkolzin, Kapanen, Draisaitl, or Hyman. Oilers 3 Kraken 1 second period in Seattle.

Kraken come close to tying the game in the third period but Oilers hold them off and Draisaitl scores his 29th (league-leading) in an empty net.

Oilers have killed 43 of 47 penalties.

Oilers hold their lead through two periods, 3-1 entering the third period in the Big E on New Year's Eve!

Opinion

Oilers post Christmas California swing brings home 1 out of a potential 6 points, a loss to a division rival for 2 place, and a two lackluster performances by Oilers goaltending.

Oilers took a first period lead in Anaheim versus Ducks, Draisaitl and Bouchard 2-0 Oilers; Gauthier of Anaheim scores his fifth of the season to make it 2-1, Second period, Oilers' Draisaitl scores -- 3-1; Third period Ducks tie the game and win 5-3 in the end by scoring 4 unanswered goals (one in the empty net).

4-3 LA ties in third period, wins game in Overtime!

Great pace for the first game after Christmas.

Oilers checking in the second period is excellent. Kuemper in goal for L.A. keeps the Kings in the game.
 

Opinion

Skinner is having a great season 2 as the Oilers starter, but the early numbers don't tell the story. He's ranked 30th overall in with a .895 save percentage and a 2.85 Goals Against Average, and one shutout.

But as they arrived at Christmas break Skinner had a respectable 13 wins, and was holding a few clinics on a big man playing goal. Knoblauch says the coaching staff is happy with the goaltending from Skinner and Pickard. 

The start of the season was busy for Stu because new defensemen had arrived. A few of his troubles with the overall averages and GAA can be identified in the positional play of the new group of players. The game flows a lot smoother with defensemen like Kulak, Emberson, Nurse, and Ekholm working hard to play the offensive style without hanging the goaltenders out to dry. 

Pickard has provided excellent relief and Skinner's December average was near the top of the NHL. I think Skinner is a great choice for Number One on Team Canada. Too bad they didn't make it.
Oilers have won 8 out of their last 9 as the Christmas break arrived, and now have second place in the Pacific Division, 5 points behind first place Vegas Golden Knights. 

Second place Oilers return to play Saturday, Dec. 28, in L.A., when they can put points between them and third place Kings.
